Major Internet Disruption Affects Numerous Online Platforms and Applications

A widespread web outage has impacted dozens online platforms and mobile apps worldwide, and users reporting troubles connecting to the web after problems at Amazon’s cloud computing platform.

The disrupted platforms encompass Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with multiple Amazon-owned platforms including its primary shopping website and the Ring doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted as well as its affiliates the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with further notifications of issues using the HMRC online portal on that morning. Additionally in Britain, many Ring device owners turned to social media to report their home gadgets were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, reports of issues on individual platforms totaled the many thousands for each platform.

The company stated that the problem originated in the eastern region of the United States at the cloud division, a unit that offers crucial online infrastructure for many businesses, who lease capacity on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global web hosting platform.

Shortly after the start of the day (PDT) in the America (8am BST), the company announced “higher problem frequencies and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the east coast of the United States. The widespread consequence was seen to disrupt apps around the world, with the outage tracking website indicating outages with the same sites in different parts of the world.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a service that tracks internet outages, further indicated a surge in problems on Monday morning, with many of them situated in the Virginia area, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the problems began.
